What Is WIR

From WIR

This is the short and simple guide to what WIR is. It is not presented as a contrast to any existing raid organization or guild. I've been realizing that a lot of people are coming over with preconceptions based on other raiding I've led, or they've been on, or what have you; this is hopefully a good explanation of what we actually are.

This is pretty important, because I am not offering the same thing here that I am offering with the WIR MC and Onyxia runs. In retrospect, I shouldn't have called those WIR, but I didn't know I was doing this at the time. Water under the bridge.

WIR is a small team of people who are committed to doing high end content together a few nights a week.

"a small team of people"

The size of the glasschewing team will peak at between 30 and 35 people. If necessary, we'll make choices about membership in order to maintain those numbers. Size is not a goal; we don't want people to stress about whether or not they'll get to raid on a given night. Membership doesn't mean you're a good person, and not being a glasschewer doesn't mean you're a bad person. All being a member means is that you're one of the people who chews glass with WIR. It is possible that not everyone who wants to raid with WIR will be able to do so. That'll suck, but the problems that come with unlimited growth are something I explicitly want to avoid.

I'm leading the team. I listen to everyone, I want people to comment and make suggestions and point out issues, and I like talking things over. I rarely if ever make decisions that can't be revisited. There's a council of raid leaders and a couple of other officers to help me make final decisions. However, in the end there needs to be a single point of responsibility.

"who are committed"

We want to bring our A game as a team. We're doing this because, in part, we want to find out how good we are both individually and, more importantly, together. We are committed to improvement, and we are committed to the success of the team. We show up to the raids not because it's a job we agreed to do, but because we want to devote this portion of our time to raiding.

"high end content"

We want to be attempting the hardest content Blizzard makes available to us. We don't need to be the first people to kill the toughest boss in the game, but we want to get to that instance and we eventually want to kill that boss.

"together"

We are a single group. There is no concept of regulars for the Black Temple raid versus regulars for the Caverns of Time raid. If you are a WIR glasschewer, you're a WIR glasschewer. We don't expect people to say "Hm, I enjoyed that instance, but I don't think I want to go along to the next one in the chain."

"a few nights a week."

We're not a high end raid guild. We do not ask for five nights a week. I have a social life, as do we all. We do ask for reliable, regular attendance on nights when we're chewing glass, which will generally be three nights per week. If this isn't something you want to do or can do, it doesn't make you a bad person, but it does mean that you aren't a perfect fit for the group.
